Keyframe and reference Look-Dev Exploration

This page shows a series of 8 keyframe studies and selected reference related to a project.

The project is the game Mafia III and PLEASE NOTE that I was NOT involved at all in making the game, these images were reworked as part of a discussion I had with the art team of the project creator Hangar13 about the design direction a follow up game might take.

The object of this effort was to show how I would approach reference exploration and keyframe creation in relation to the concept & theme of the project and to offer a demonstration on how it might be applied to selected keyframes as a method of directing development.

The goal was not to change the image or content too much, but to bring it into better alignment with what my selected reference material was and to do it with consideration for what might be possible within the game engine.

Keyframes

8 frames were selected to represent a range of aspects of the game.

Style Targets

Then, considering the stated initial look direction, a gritty 1970's mood & styling, I selected three films that I felt best represented the period in relation to the film-making style they were after. Below are pulled reference frames from "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975), "Serpico" (1979), and "Cruising" (1980)

THE PAINT OVERS

The keyframes were reworked with the reference in mind. The images below shows first the original version, and clicking on the image will reveal my paint over. Clicking on the arrow below the image will reveal the specific references I aligned to that keyframe.
